The philosophy of good photography
Photography is about sharing an experience and promoting it. A good photograph should take risks without relying on a gimmick. Nor should it require reams of text to ‘explain’ it.
Wedding Photography
A wedding is an experience and the photographer should allow others to share that experience through the medium of photography and not be a ‘Prima Donna’ bossing the couple and their families for that ‘special shot’ that in reality bears little resemblance to the events of the day. Red Max Designs strikes a gentle balance between unobtrusive shots taken when the subject is unaware yet animated, while ensuring that the few group photographs required for Granny’s mantelpiece are achieved with minimum displacement or disturbance to the schedule of the day’s events. This is the true nature of good reportage.
Fashion Photo Shoots
Fashion photography should allow innovative designers to show off their wares to stylish young people who want to be able to show off their best features enhanced by chic or daring designs. The photograph should sell to the customer by simply presenting the designer’s skill.
Photography at Horse Shows
Equine photography has been stuck in a Stubbs mould for too long. Horse riding in all its forms is an exciting experience shared by horse and rider and photography should reflect that. The finer points of a horse will be examined by the judges on the field yet a photograph should show what that experience entailed, from the sweat on the horse with its straining sinews to the urgency or concentration on the face of the rider. A good horse photograph should preserve a moment in time, and be an aid to future memories.
Photographing Special Events
When photographing any special event such as an investiture or religious ceremony it is important to show the emotion, pride and solemnity from the participants’ point of view. Such occasions often required a great deal of prior commitment from the people involved. Intrusion is not acceptable and a mark of good photography is the ability to record either a close-up view or the broader context without interrupting proceedings by posing subjects or elbowing in front of others.
